There are 67 boats out in the Atlantic today competing in the final segment of the 19th annual Virginia Beach Billfish Tournament.
All are trying to catch the team on Cuttin’ Up, a Virginia Beach boat captained by Nick Jones that took the early, and commanding, lead in the event on the first day. Josh Bowen wrestled in a 612.5-pound blue marlin that gave the team as many points, where it sits today with lead of more than 400 points over several contenders.
We all know such leads never are safe when it comes to fishing, but the fleet of 84 teams vying for a total purse of $813,000 has been struggling to find fish.
In two days of competition, only 24 billfish have been caught – with all but Cuttin Up’s fish released. Heading into today’s finale, only 11 gamefish have been landed.
Which gives Cuttin’ Up as close to a sure victory as ever could be possible in fishing.
The rest of the fleet isn’t conceding, knowing that just one bite can blow up the scoreboard.
We’ll be back later with final results and payouts.
