Hurricane Henri = big surf

Hurricane Henri – forecasters bumped it up from a tropical storm just now – already is bringing big surf and dangerous rip currents to the mid-Atlantic coast.

Videos from the Outer Banks this morning already are showing overhead and glassy conditions.

As the storm passes us on its way to New England states, surf around Hatteras and Virginia Beach could get bigger and might even clean up nicely on Sunday when winds shift around from the south-southeast to clean up the faces.

It would be nice if this storm would have held off for several days so it could benefit the 59th annual East Coast Surfing Championship that starts Sunday and continues through Sunday, Aug. 29.

Locals, however, will enjoy the conditions through probably Monday and get in some good practice time.

And who knows with the tropics this time of year. There already is a system to the southeast of Henri that could show up just in time for next week’s finals.

More on the ECSC later. In the meantime, stay safe in the water, it ain’t anytime to play with.
